There is an old saying in China, "if you restrict yourself on moral values, you are saint; if you restrict others on moral values, you are a robber..... This adage seemingly befits Modi government's recent decision on porn sites. Despite India's apex court ruling in favour of upholding citizen's right to privacy, Modi govt tried to usurp this right. Firstly, govt banned 857 adult sites but later retracked and said it only banned porn children sites. Modi govt's move to ban porn sites stems from its over-zealousness on "moral policing". Its a part of saffron agenda and all RSS frontal outfits are out fot it. Remember January(24) 2009 shocking incident in Karnataka when Sri Ram Sena- Sangh outfit- attacked girls in a pub in Mangalore. A group of 40 activists of the Sri Rama Sena barged into the pub "Amnesia – The Lounge" and beat up a group of young women and men, saying the women were violating traditional Indian values. Two of the women were hospitalised. The video of the incident became one of the most watched clips on YouTube.Later in that year, Pravin Valke, founding member of the Sri Rama Sene, told a newpaper "These girls come from all over India, drink, smoke, and walk around in the night spoiling the traditional girls of Mangalore. Why should girls go to pubs? Are they going to serve their future husbands alcohol? Should they not be learning to make chapattis? Bars and pubs should be for men only. We wanted to ensure that all women in Mangalore are home by 7 p.m. Though Shri Ram Sena chief Pramod Muthalik later apologised for the attack on weekend revellers at a Mangalore pub, saying the way the right-wing group acted "was wrong" but insisted it was done to "save our mothers and daughters". He was later arrested under IPC section 153 by the Karnataka Police. This incident also revealed the double speak of BJP. The then Karnataka Chief Minister B. S. Yeddyurappa denied that Sriram Sena was not a Sangh Parivar outfit but ruled out banning the Sri Ram Sena even though the outfit's chief admitted to wrongdoing. However, massive public outcry against 'moral policing' forced Sriram Sena to go in oblivion. The same way Modi Govt had to make hasty retreat following eruption of huge condemnation on social media. There was a mass hysteria on that night (the day Indians are most active on porn sites, according to Pornhub's survey) after online users in India realized that some of their favorite porn sites were not accessible. Its a lesson for Modi govt. Don't pose your nose into citizens' private life. What they do privately is none of govt business. As writer Chetan Bhagat has pointed out" Don't ban porn. Ban men ogling, leering, brushing past, groping, molesting, abusing, humiliating and raping women. Ban non-consent. Not sex".
